Expert Corner Smart Metering is a Bridge for Energy Transition & Zero-Carbon Environment Sunil Mittal Director of Business Developement - India The energy transition is a pathway toward transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon by the second half of this century. This energy transition will be enabled by information technology, smart technology, policy frameworks and market instruments. The primary drivers of this global energy transition are, firstly, the emergence of renewables (such as solar and wind power) as alternatives to traditional fossil fuels and, secondly, the growth of battery storage, including for electric vehicles, decentralised energy systems and large-scale battery storage. Another driver for Energy Transition is Growing Demand for Electricity as in the coming years, demand for electricity will grow exponentially. On global level, investment in 2020 in the energy transition market was $501.3 Bn.
For this energy transition adoption, Power Utilities need to depend more on digital solutions to interact with their low voltage network system, for which Smart Metering technology is the only solution world-wide. AMI will benefit Utilities from its granular visibility in low voltage grid and will lead to more efficient grid operation. It helps the utilities in monitoring and managing their Distributed Energy Resources, Energy Storage Systems, Outage Management System, provide Grid Stability, Electric Vehicle Management System, providing Distribution Intelligence, Superior information about Grid Health & Behaviour and Improved Asset Management, etc.
Considering the importance of Smart Metering for Power Utilities, the demand of this technology is increasing in all regions worldwide. The global smart meters market size is expected to grow from estimated revenue of USD 20.7 billion in 2020 to USD 28.6 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 6.7%.
