Networked Energy Services Expands Its Leading Smart Grid Market Share in Denmark

Ravdex deploys the NES Patagonia Energy Applications Platform, including its Security Suite and FTTH smart meter communications option

San Jose, CA, February 26th, 2018: Networked Energy Services Corporation (NES), a global smart grid solution provider with the industry’s leading Energy Applications Platform (EAPTM), announced today the selection by Denmark’s Ravdex to install the NES System for all of its customers. Ravdex is a utility in Denmark with about 17,000 electricity customers in their network. This project further expands NES’s leading market share in Denmark, which includes nearly one million smart meters and other devices that enable a smarter Danish electrical grid. Ravdex selected NES as its smart grid platform provider and OneCo as its tactical project partner. The project will utilize the NES Generation 4 Smart Meter IP to fiber communication option for consumption data communications and its proven power line communication technology for critical grid health analytics to help Ravdex improve safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Based in Denmark, Ravdex A/S, a networking company, manages grid operations and maintenance to ensure a high-quality distribution grid for its customers. Besides remote reading of metering and power quality data, the decision to use the NES System will enable consumers to gain access to current consumption through the NES smart meter extension features – enabling them to actively participate in energy conservation programs. In addition, the NES Patagonia EAP provides a flexible framework so Ravdex can leverage its Patagonia AMI investment, utilize the distributed intelligence built into the NES smart grid and implement NES Applications like Grid Navigator and Grid Flow to respond rapidly to market changes and exploit new technology opportunities. Patagonia EAP provides a secure and interoperable software and communications solution that helps improve customer service, grid reliability, and efficient operations. The NES Patagonia Platform offers extensive industry leading security features, such as automatically changing unique meter keys, intrusion detection for individual meters, and AES-128 encryption, which are designed to help protect, detect and respond to cybersecurity threats in an efficient and timely manner.

The solution provided to Ravdex enables communications with NES smart meters not only via the proven NES OSGP (Open Smart Grid Protocol) based power line communication technology that provides >99.8% daily availability of metering data, but also via a redundant communication channel utilizing a fiber network connected to the NES meter’s multi-purpose expansion port (MEP). This provides both a backup and alternative communications network for Ravdex that allows the nef Group to leverage and expand their fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure. This reliability of communications is vital for Ravdex to remotely configure meters to meet changes in regulatory and market requirements and leverage backwards compatibility of NES solutions over the long-term.

“We have been preparing for this project for the last few years by thoroughly searching the market to find the right solution for our customers, and we are pleased to have now found that solution based on the NES Patagonia Platform,” says Torben Larsen, director of Ravdex A / S. “NES and OneCo demonstrated their innovation and flexibility by designing a system where meters not only communicate via the power line but also communicate via an IP fiber gateway enabling the solution to leverage the fiber infrastructure and improve our services and capabilities for our customers. The solution also opens the door for optimization of our own daily operations and, in the longer term, for planning the necessary investments in our facilities to handle future issues and changes.”

"This new project further validates the performance and value of the NES Patagonia Platform to customers in Denmark and around the World,” said Michael Anderson, President and CEO of NES. "In addition to expanding our leading customer base in Denmark, we are pleased to provide Ravdex with an innovative IP to Fiber solution from the meter that meets their unique objectives for dual communication options, and also supports future market requirements, future smart grid analytics, and of course critical and always growing security requirements."
